New Brattle study: Managed charging doubles the grid’s EV hosting capacity

A new Brattle Group study based on real-world electric vehicle (EV) charging data proves that active managed charging is essential for grid-scale EV adoption.

Using data from an EnergyHub EV program, the study found that active managed charging can:

  • Increase distribution system EV hosting capacity by 1.3x to 3.2x
  • Cut EV charging peaks by 30–50%
  • Defer feeder and transformer upgrades by up to 10 years
  • Save utilities and ratepayers up to $400 per EV annually

Unlike passive time-of-use (TOU) rates that can trigger secondary peaks, EnergyHub’s managed charging solution smooths these spikes and keeps load within infrastructure limits — while ensuring drivers get the charge they need.
