BROOKLYN, N.Y., 7 October, 2020: EnergyHub is working with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), the largest municipal utility in the country, to manage their bring your own thermostat (BYOT) demand response program. EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS platform allows LADWP to harness flexibility from HVAC systems to manage system-wide and localized peaks, contributing to immediate grid health and long-term emissions goals.
Managing thermostats through EnergyHub’s platform provides LADWP with flexibility to manage its system-wide peak and address regional distribution constraints, contributing to their climate goals.
LADWP Power Savers, which launched this June and runs through October, is an energy management program for residential and small business electric customers to help lower and manage their energy costs, while reducing strain on the power grid during periods of high energy demand. The program supports LADWP’s Clean Grid LA initiative by providing a clean energy alternative to using natural gas “peaker” plants to maintain reliability when energy use spikes.
“EnergyHub’s platform allows us to build and manage a BYOT resource that can provide grid support and help us meet our long-term emissions goals,” said Jason Rondou, Director of Clean Grid LA Strategy at LADWP. “The combination of EnergyHub’s expertise in running successful BYOT programs with the capabilities of the Mercury DERMS platform puts us in the best position to achieve LADWP’s goals.”
Since launching, the program has enrolled over 16,274 smart thermostats that contribute to reducing LADWP’s peak demand. During the heat wave from August 14-21st, seven separate demand response events were triggered by LADWP’s energy control center, which monitors and dispatches power on the grid. Power Savers participating customers offset the peak demand by an average of 9 megawatts (MW) for each DR event. LADWP’s goal is to deploy enough smart thermostats to achieve 25 megawatts (MW) of flexible power capacity by the end of the 2021 high demand summer season.
EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS platform, combined with EnergyHub’s program management services, provide a full suite of capabilities for a comprehensive BYOT solution.
- Resource formation: Acquisition marketing services, incentive management, and enrollment verification
- Situational awareness: Monitoring, flexibility forecasting, and DER forecasting
- Optimized control: Asset modeling, aggregation optimization, and autonomous services
- Performance measurement: Settlement and measurement and verification
