Smart Meters

Do I need a smart meter?

The EnergyHub system works with some of the most widely installed electricity meters in the U.S.; meters that communicate the kind of information a Home Base uses to report about your home’s energy use. But this connection isn’t required in order for the EnergyHub system to work. It just helps to paint a fuller picture of your home’s entire energy use profile.

Do I already have a
smart meter?

Here’s how to identify if your meter can communicate wirelessly with the Home Base. It needs to be either an Itron® ERT® meter type 07 or a newer compatible ZigBee®-enabled smart meter.

Here's how to identify an Itron ERT type 07 meter

  • Look for the Itron logo on the face of your meter.
  • If it’s an ERT meter, there will be a bar code at the top of the face of the meter that has a sequence of numbers below it. If that sequence starts with 07, you’re ready to connect to an EnergyHub Home Base that’s equipped with an ERT radio (one of the two versions we offer).

See if your smart meter can work with Energy Hub

To determine if your electrical meter is a smart meter, look for an Itron OpenWay™ logo on the meter face (see graphic). If it appears, you may have the capability to transmit home energy use information and get the benefit of using an EnergyHub Home Base. But first your electric utility will need to enable this functionality. Reach out to your utility and ask them to enable the meter to connect to devices like the Home Base so that you can better understand energy use in your home. Most utilities will be happy to have you be a smarter energy consumer; some may not be ready yet. It never hurts to ask!

Live in Texas? Here's how you can identify if you have a ZigBee meter

  • If you live in Texas and purchase energy through a retail energy provider, chances are pretty good that you already have a ZigBee meter that can communicate with a Home Base.
  • The easiest way to find out is to create an account on www.smartmetertexas.com and log in. You’ll need an ESI ID, which can usually be found on your electricity bill. If you can’t locate it, try calling your retail energy provider to get it. If you don’t have an ESI ID, you won’t be able to connect your meter to a Home Base.
  • If you successfully create a residential account on Smart Meter Texas, you should be able to add a Home Base as a Home Area Network (HAN) device per the instructions included on the Smart Meter Texas site. There you can find support information for adding a device.
