TIME Magazine Names EnergyHub Dashboard a Best Invention of 2009

EnergyHub's Dashboard has been chosen by Time Magazine as a Best Invention, the magazine announced Thursday. The touchscreen Dashboard, which combines temperature control and comprehensive home energy management in one easy-to-use device, was praised by Time for its ability to “rein in the real power hogs" in a user's home.

As the centerpiece of EnergyHub's innovative solution, the Dashboard tracks and manages energy use of the entire home, and of individual appliances, in real time. The Dashboard also allows utilities to communicate messages and pricing directly to their customers, a breakthrough that facilitates better service and energy savings for providers and consumers.

The EnergyHub Dashboard "is something I saw demonstrated earlier this year and it blew me away," says Lev Grossman, senior writer at Time and editor of the magazine’s annual Best Inventions issue. "In a car you can usually see how much gas you’re using. With electricity in a home, you never could before. But now... in real time you can, using EnergyHub, and I think it's going to save America billions and billions of dollars."

The Dashboard is currently deployed in utility pilots in the US and will be available direct to consumers early next year. "This is going to be in homes in 2010, and it should have a huge impact," says Josh Tyrangiel, Time deputy managing editor and managing editor of Time.com.

"It's very exciting to be named a Best Invention by such a prestigious publication," says EnergyHub CEO Seth Frader-Thompson. "I think it also speaks to the demand of the market. Both utilities and consumers want to be able to take action to increase energy efficiency and save money. At EnergyHub, we have been working very hard to deliver practical and valuable solutions, so it's particularly gratifying to receive this honor."

Previous Time Best Inventions include the iPhone (2007), Youtube.com (2006), and NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers (2002).

Itron and EnergyHub Partnership Allows Utilities to Provide Consumers with Real-Time Data, Total Control Over Energy Usage

DENVER-- Itron Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI) announced today its partnership with EnergyHub, a leading home energy solutions provider, for integration of Itron's industry-leading ERT reading technology with EnergyHub's in-home energy management devices. Combining the technologies will allow electric, gas, and water utilities to engage their customers as stewards in solving the peak-demand problem.

Itron is the first advanced metering vendor to incorporate EnergyHub's in-home, touchscreen Dashboard and Temperature Control Unit with ERT reading technology. Under terms of the agreement, Itron will also license its ERT reading technology to EnergyHub. This enables the Dashboard to act as a two-way messaging platform through which consumption data provided by Itron's ERT reading technology can be communicated to customers, and through which customers can respond. It will also help customers understand next-generation tiered, time-of-use, and critical peak rate structures.

"EnergyHub's expertise in human factors, combined with their understanding of the issues facing today's utilities, has led to the development of a world-class Smart Grid product line," said Philip Mezey, Itron North America senior vice president and chief operating officer. "Our partnership with EnergyHub creates a powerful migration path for our customers to extend the value of their deployments toward true Smart Grid solutions."

The Dashboard combines, in a single interface, the functionality of a home energy display and a programmable communicating thermostat. It can also be augmented with EnergyHub Sockets and Strips so consumers can receive a full and detailed picture of their energy usage, down to individual appliances.

Both companies' technologies support a variety of communication standards including ZigBee, allowing for true interoperability, which is foundational to the burgeoning Smart Grid.

"Itron's ERT technology is the de facto standard in today's advanced metering market," said David Wechsler, vice president of Business Development for EnergyHub. "We are excited to work hand-in-hand with Itron to help bring sophisticated Smart Grid applications to visionary adopters of the technology."

EnergyHub and Con Edison Partner to Bring the Consumer Face of the Smart Grid to New York City Customers

EnergyHub, Inc., a leading home energy solutions provider, today announced that it has been chosen by Consolidated Edison Company of New York (Con Edison), the regulated utility that provides electric service in New York City, as a partner for its Smart Grid pilot program in Queens. Con Edison, which serves more than 3 million customers, is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies. EnergyHub will provide selected Con Edison customers with its in-home Dashboard and Consumer Web Portal as well as other tools that allow consumers to track and control their energy usage for greater energy and monetary savings.

“Our partnership with Con Edison gives EnergyHub an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate the value of our solution for both the utility and its customers,” said Seth Frader-Thompson, CEO of EnergyHub. “We are thrilled to have a thought leader like Con Edison as one of our early customers.”

With one of the highest load densities in the world, New York City and its surrounding area represent the most complex and diverse test bed for urban and suburban Smart Grid performance. The objective of Con Edison’s $6 million Smart Grid pilot program is to build a Smart Grid prototype that would demonstrate many high-tech and intelligent components, including two-way communication between the company and the customer. With its easy-to-use system, EnergyHub will supply Con Edison with the crucial technology that will enhance the relationship between the energy provider and user.

"Working with EnergyHub, we look forward to introducing the Smart Grid to New York City. Together, we will make the city a model for showing how Smart Grid technologies can work in dense urban areas to improve service reliability and help reduce customers' electric usage,” said Louis Rana, president and COO of Con Edison. “We're also pleased that we have identified a qualified company within our service area to help us launch our Smart Grid program."

The Dashboard, Socket, Power Strip, and Consumer Web Portal are key components of EnergyHub’s home area network (HAN) solution for utilities and consumers. They provide the combination of residential HVAC control, energy monitoring, and appliance management. The Dashboard’s intuitive touchscreen interface allows users to monitor and control all electrical devices and appliances in the home, and provides an “at-a-glance” overview of the home’s total electricity and gas use, both historical and in real time. The Consumer Web Portal gives residential customers detailed analysis of their energy usage, as well as remote control of their energy-consuming devices in the home. As two-way messaging platforms, the Dashboard and Consumer Web Portal display energy prices and peak-demand warnings, send customers energy-saving tips, and manage demand response events.
