Case study: APS leverages DER flexibility for grid management and renewables smoothing

Arizona desert with urban development in the distance

Arizona Public Service (APS) has become a national leader on clean energy with a commitment to transition to 100 percent clean and carbon-free electricity by 2050. They’re currently taking steps to address challenges around renewable intermittency, system peaks, and distribution constraints that every utility will face in the coming years.

DERs are a key part of their solution.

APS has partnered with EnergyHub to implement a multi-DER strategy to meet grid needs and contribute to their emissions goals. Their DER portfolio managed through EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS includes thermostats, water heaters, batteries, and solar inverters.

Importantly, APS has shown what is possible when utilities leverage the unique capabilities of different asset classes to achieve their goals.
