EnergyHub recently joined with Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) and ecobee, one of our thermostat partners, to discuss an innovative natural gas demand response program in a Peak Load Management Association (PLMA) webinar.

The utility launched the SoCalGas Advisory Thermostat Program in January 2017 to help customers conserve natural gas, save money on their heating bills, and lower the risk of regional electrical and heating outages.

The rebate program was the first of its kind to be offered by a natural gas utility for gas heating, meaning SoCalGas needed trusted partners to take steps into the unknown world of natural gas demand response. SoCalGas chose EnergyHub’s Mercury DERMS as the software platform it used to manage this innovative DR program.

SoCalGas had previously worked with EnergyHub and ecobee in a joint load control program with Southern California Edison, and SoCalGas Program Manager Michelle Cook described the partnership for the natural gas demand response program as “a natural evolution” for the utility.

In the PLMA webinar, experts from SoCalGas, EnergyHub, and ecobee, which provided the thermostats for the program, detailed how the utility was able to design and launch the program in a relatively short timeframe.
